TFT Patch 17.9 Notes: Biggest Changes Before Enchanted Wilds

Teamfight Tactics patch 17.9 is the final dedicated balance patch for the Space Gods set before Enchanted Wilds goes live on 26 August 2026. Riot Games published the official TFT patch 17.9 notes at 2am Malaysia time on 12 August, with major changes for Shepherd, Twisted Fate, Gwen, Milio, Meepsie and Zed.

The short version is that patch 17.9 creates more high-variance lines. Gwen receives direct damage buffs, Meepsie becomes a Magic Fighter with a replacement spell, Zed joins the base champion roster with lower health, and Twisted Fate can now roll a much stronger high or a much harsher low.

TFT patch 17.9 changes at a glance

Unit or traitMain patch 17.9 changePractical takeaway
ShepherdLower mana requirement, reduced AP per cast and shield duration, stronger Tail Sweep scaling and Shepherd (7) wave damageExpect faster casts and a stronger vertical cap, but not a blanket buff at every breakpoint
Twisted FateA 9 always grants gold; a 1 deals 15% maximum-health true damage; minimum damage drops while maximum damage risesHis outcomes become deliberately more volatile
GwenGroove threshold rises from 40% to 50% and primary-target damage increasesHer focused damage line receives the clearest direct lift
MeepsieRole changes from Magic Tank to Magic Fighter and the spell is replaced by Big BangRe-evaluate items and positioning instead of using the old tank assumptions
ZedAdded to the base champion roster; base health falls from 1,300 to 1,100Access is broader, but the unit is less durable
TFT patch 17.9 highlights showing buffs for Gwen, Lulu, Maokai, Rhaast, Tahm Kench and Shepherd, plus adjustments to Twisted Fate, Milio, Meepsie and Zed.
Riot’s patch highlight separates direct buffs from broader adjustments, an important distinction for Twisted Fate, Milio, Meepsie and Zed.

Champion and trait changes worth planning around

Shepherd now starts at 0/40 mana instead of 0/50, so the summon casts sooner. The trade-off is lower AP gained per cast and a shorter summon shield. The trait’s late cap improves more clearly: Tail Sweep scales to 200/300/400 AP, while the Shepherd (7) wave rises from 220 to 300 AP.

Gwen’s Groove threshold increases from 40% to 50%, and her primary-target damage moves to 155/235/440 AP. Lulu can drop more gold, Maokai gains attack speed and higher NOVA Selector maximum-health damage, Rhaast receives a shorter spell duration with much higher spell damage, and Tahm Kench’s Oracle gold per round increases.

Meepsie changes most structurally. The unit shifts from Magic Tank to Magic Fighter, starts at 0/55 mana and receives Big Bang in place of the old spell. Base attack damage falls sharply, while attack speed rises. Milio can sometimes cast again at another target, but both primary and bounce damage are reduced, so the extra cast should not be read as a simple universal buff.

What patch 17.9 means for your next game

  • Scout for Zed earlier. Adding Zed to the normal roster changes availability, but the health nerf means positioning and defensive support still matter.
  • Rebuild Meepsie assumptions. A role and spell replacement is more important than a small number change; reassess items rather than copying the previous patch’s frontline setup.
  • Treat Twisted Fate as higher variance. The minimum hit is much weaker and the maximum hit is much stronger, with a health cost attached to the lowest roll.
  • Check the full Shepherd breakpoint. Faster casting comes with weaker per-cast AP and shield duration, while the strongest damage gain sits at Shepherd (7).

These are balance implications, not a guaranteed best-comp list. Lobby contesting, Augments, items and the live hotfix state can change which line is strongest, so use the official notes as the fixed baseline and adapt to the board you actually receive.

When Enchanted Wilds replaces Space Gods

Riot says Enchanted Wilds will go live on 26 August at the end of patch 17.9. Space Gods is expected to remain playable for a limited period after the new set arrives, but the patch notes do not give a final removal date. That makes 26 August the confirmed handover point, not a claim that every Space Gods queue disappears that day.
